Design Is Not About Design

A Conversation with Pablo Muñoz

What’s on brand for me this week?

Interviewing another designer and accidentally ending up in a full conversation about humanity, ecology, relationships, and our collective need to go outside.

Growth.

This week on GRAFIK CONTENT, I sat down with Pablo Muñoz — Colombian-Canadian designer, storyteller, founder of Narrative Shift Studio, and someone whose work lives at the intersection of creativity, public engagement, community, and culture.

And what I expected to be a conversation about branding became something much bigger.

Creativity Is Not a Luxury

One of the strongest ideas throughout this episode is this: Design isn’t something exclusive. Design exists everywhere.

People solve problems every day. Communities build systems every day. They might not call it design — but that’s what it is.

And honestly? I love that perspective. Because creativity shouldn’t feel inaccessible.

The Work Is Not About You

One thing that really stood out to me was Pablo’s philosophy around client work.

His perspective isn’t: “I’m the genius. Trust me.”

It’s: Tell me your story. Where are you trying to go? What’s the next chapter?

His role isn’t to insert himself.

It’s to build the process that helps other people uncover something that already exists inside their work.

Which… I realized halfway through this conversation is also exactly how I approach branding.

We’re conduits. Not dictators.

Why Are We Making Everything So Complicated?

We also got into one of my favourite topics: Creative jargon.

Because somewhere along the way people started acting like sounding confusing equals sounding intelligent. No.

Pablo talks about intentionally stripping complexity away and meeting people where they are — because accessibility creates better outcomes.

And honestly?

I think more industries need that.

The Creative “What The F*ck” Moments

You know this is one of my favourite questions.

We talked about those moments in creative work where something unexpectedly reveals itself.

Pablo shared a story about building a visual identity for a migrant workers organization — and suddenly realizing one of the sketches resembled produce stickers.

And that became the entire direction.

That moment where the work suddenly says:

No no. This is what I am.

If you’re creative… you know exactly what that feels like.

We Need More Connection, Not More Optimization

This part really stayed with me.

We got into conversations about reconnecting with ancestral practices, relationships, environment, and remembering that humans are not machines.

There was something really hopeful about hearing another creative talk openly about wanting more slowness, more connection, more community.

Because I think a lot of people feel that right now.

You Don’t Build Anything Alone

Toward the end of the conversation, we got into community.

And honestly?

This might be my favourite section.

Because Pablo talks about how designers aren’t competitors.

They’re collaborators.

We build stronger industries when we support each other instead of shrinking ourselves into scarcity.

That hit.

Final Thoughts

At its core, this episode is about remembering that creative work is human work.

Stories matter. Relationships matter.

Process matters. And maybe success isn’t building something alone.

Maybe success is building things together.
