Building Something from Nothing

A Conversation with Angela Deeds

What’s on brand for me this week?

Buying a candle because I “like the vibe” and then immediately deciding it represents my entire personality.

Growth.

This week on GRAFIK CONTENT, I sat down with Angela Deeds, founder of South of Somewhere Designs — a candle company rooted in creativity, simplicity, and intention.

And what I thought was going to be a conversation about products… turned into something much more interesting.

Because building something by hand?

That’s never just about the product.

The Idea Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

One of the things that stood out right away in this conversation is how simple the starting point was.

Candles.

Not groundbreaking.
Not overcomplicated.
Not trying to reinvent the wheel.

And yet — that simplicity is exactly what makes it work.

Because when you strip things back, what’s left is intention.

Why this scent?
Why this design?
Why this feeling?

That’s where the brand actually lives.

Creativity in the Everyday

We talk a lot on this podcast about creativity in big, visible ways.

Design.
Music.
Content.
Brands.

But this episode is a good reminder that creativity also lives in the everyday.

In the small things.
In the details.
In the way something feels when you interact with it.

Angela’s work sits in that space.

It’s not about being loud — it’s about being intentional.

And that kind of creativity hits differently.

Building a Brand That Feels Like You

Another thread throughout this conversation is alignment.

Not just building a business…

But building something that actually feels like you.

Because it’s very easy — especially right now — to build something based on what you think will work.

What will sell.
What looks good online.
What other people are doing.

But when you build something from your own perspective, your own taste, your own instinct?

That’s when it becomes something people actually connect with.

The Reality of Starting from Scratch

We also got into the reality of starting a product-based business.

And spoiler: it’s not just lighting candles and posting aesthetic photos.

It’s:

  • Figuring things out as you go

  • Making mistakes

  • Adjusting

  • Learning

  • Repeating

There’s no perfect roadmap.

Just a lot of trial, error, and figuring out what works for you.

Which, honestly, is kind of the theme of this entire podcast.

Small Things, Big Impact

One of my favourite takeaways from this conversation is the idea that small things can have a big impact.

Lighting a candle. Creating a moment. Shifting the energy in a space.

It’s easy to overlook those things.

But they matter.

And building a business around that idea?

That’s kind of beautiful.

Final Thoughts

At its core, this episode is about simplicity.

Not doing less… but doing things with more intention.

Creating something that feels aligned.
Building something that reflects you.
And trusting that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.

Because sometimes the smallest ideas…

Are the ones that stick.
